RALEIGH, NC (April 19, 2024)– The Public School Forum of North Carolina has released the 2024 North Carolina Education Policy Primer, which serves as a nonpartisan, fact-based guide to public education in North Carolina. The Primer provides a comprehensive overview of how education policy is made, along with the current state of public education and the policies guiding it. The Forum produces this guide in order to inform current policymakers, candidates for public office, and the general public.
Education policy involves a wide range of interconnected issues such as school finance and facilities, accountability and assessment, technology, teachers and so much more. In order to make well-informed and evidence-based decisions, policymakers and voters face the challenge of understanding complex educational issues.
“The Primer is a great tool for anyone interested in learning more about education policy in North Carolina from how policies are created, to the responsibilities of different levels of government and officials, to how policies are currently affecting students and educators,” said Public School Forum Sr Director of Policy & Research Dr. Lauren Fox. “Our team puts a lot of effort into making sure this resource is both fact-based and easy to understand so that it can benefit political candidates who don’t have much experience with education as well as voters looking to make informed decisions.”
For greater accessibility The Forum will be hosting a Public Education Primer Session virtually on June 12, 2024, at 2 pm. All North Carolina citizens are welcome and encouraged to attend. Registration for that event will open soon.
The Forum will also hold its biennial Candidate Education Policy Primer Sessions in June with candidates for public office including those running for the NC General Assembly, boards of county commissions and local boards of education.

About the Public School Forum of North Carolina
Since our founding in 1986 as a nonpartisan “think and do tank,” the Public School Forum of North Carolina has been a champion of better schools and one of the most trusted sources in the state for research and analysis on vital education issues. In order to provide meaningful action on our state’s most important public education issues, we bring together leaders from business, education and government to study education issues, develop ideas, and ultimately inform and shape education policy. We do this through research, policy work, innovative programs, advocacy, and continuing education for educators and policymakers.
