RALEIGH, NC (October 29, 2019) – The Public School Forum of North Carolina is excited to announce the establishment of the Dr. Dudley Flood Center for Educational Equity and Opportunity (CEEO), which will serve as a hub to identify and connect organizations, networks, and thought leaders who address equity, access, and opportunity in education across North Carolina.
CEEO was made possible by a $150,000 grant from the Burroughs Wellcome Fund to the Public School Forum for the planning, development, and establishment of the Center, in addition to a $25,000 gift to the Forum from the Conway Family Fund.
“The Burroughs Wellcome Fund is committed to diversity and equity in education,” said Alfred Mays, program officer at the Fund. “We are pleased to support a collaborative strategy that ensures an equity lens is being applied to policy analysis, research, and programmatic efforts in education.”
“Peter [Conway] and I are so happy to honor Dr. Dudley Flood, a North Carolina hero for children and education,” said Sandra Wilcox Conway. “With Dr. Flood’s inspiration to serve as a compass, we know the Center will share and expand his legacy of wisdom, courage and collaboration for generations to come.”
“The Public School Forum is so excited to accept these awards, as they will accelerate and deepen our impact by advancing the key recommendations from the Forum’s Study Group XVI’s Committee on Racial Equity,” said Dr. Tom Williams, board chair for the Public School Forum of NC. “These generous gifts will allow us to increase the collaboration of partnering organizations and individuals from across North Carolina driven to ensure each child realizes an equitable educational opportunity.”
Dr. Dudley Flood is an educator and champion of school integration in North Carolina. In the years following the Brown v. Board of Education decision that mandated school desegregation in the United States, Dr. Flood travelled to every corner of the state to unite divided communities and work toward integrating our public schools. His legendary commitment to school integration and his belief that every child deserves an equitable educational opportunity will serve as the foundation and beacon for the work of the Forum’s new Center for Educational Equity and Opportunity.
The Public School Forum looks forward to collaborating with multiple partners and an advisory board comprised of representatives from various education organizations and stakeholders, who will guide the work plan of the Center.
